It was early on a Saturday morning. I had just finished praying for a friend God had placed on my heart. I hadn't spoken with him in quite some time, yet I felt a strong prompting to lift him before the Lord, so I did. Just then, the phone rang.
It was my friend Lois. "I was out for a walk listening to the song you sent me," she said. "I just wanted you to know that I was praying for you." Tears nearly filled my eyes.
There I was, praying for someone else while someone else was praying for me. What an unexpected reminder of God's loving care.
That moment got me thinking about prayer and its importance throughout Scripture. There are more than 650 recorded prayers in the Bible, including 25 prayers spoken by Jesus Himself. Surely that tells us something about the importance of communicating with our Creator.
One passage that caught my attention was Psalm 72. In this psalm, the prayer is for the king to possess a heart for righteousness, hands that administer justice, and eyes that see the poor and needy.
The psalmist understood something important: even kings need prayer. In fact, Psalm 72:15 speaks of prayers being offered continually on the king's behalf. Though he held a position of great authority, he still needed God's help and the intercession of others.
How much more do we?
Sometimes we hesitate to pray because we feel we're bothering God with our requests. Yet Scripture tells us to "pray without ceasing." God invites us into continual conversation with Him. He wants us to bring our needs, our burdens, our hopes, and our fears before Him because He is the source of everything we need.
Jesus said: "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened."
From a newborn baby taking its first breath to a king ruling a nation, from the strongest among us to the weakest, we all need prayer.
God never intended for us to carry life's burdens alone. Prayer is not our last resort—it is our lifeline to the One who knows us, loves us, and holds every detail of our lives in His hands.
So if you've never prayed before, pray. If you pray every day, keep praying. And if you've grown weary and wonder whether your prayers matter, don't give up. God is listening. Keep talking to Him. Keep trusting Him. And whatever you do, never stop praying.
Closing Prayer Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of prayer and for inviting us into Your presence at any moment of any day. Thank You for hearing our hearts even before we speak a word. Teach us to pray with faith, persistence, and trust. Remind us that no concern is too small and no burden is too heavy to bring to You.
Today, help us be mindful not only of our own needs but also of those around us who need encouragement, strength, healing, and hope. Place people on our hearts and give us the faithfulness to pray for them.
And when we feel alone, remind us that You are near and that others may be lifting us up in prayer as well. May we never stop seeking You, trusting You, and talking with You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
