"Because he loves me," says the Lord, "I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name." Psalm 91:14
I expected an ordinary day.
The morning began with a knock at the door. Still in my pajamas and hurrying down the stairs, I realized it was the repairman I had been expecting. Swallowing my pride, I opened the door.
He greeted me with a smile, though I had no idea his heart was carrying the weight of a difficult personal situation.
As we talked, his face suddenly brightened. "You have to meet my new puppy," he said. Moments later he returned carrying the most adorable chocolate-brown pup with floppy ears and bright, curious eyes.
There I stood—in my pajamas—laughing as I hugged a stranger's dog. It certainly wasn't the ordinary start I had imagined.
Later that day, over lunch, tears filled the eyes of a dear friend as she shared the shocking news that our beloved friend Marlene had passed away that morning. Instantly my heart cried out to God, asking Him to rescue her daughter from despair and surround her with His peace—to bring beauty from ashes and joy in the midst of mourning.
When I arrived home, I was greeted once again by the sweet puppy I had met earlier. The repairman glanced toward my Adirondack chairs beside the pond and remarked that they looked like the perfect place to sit for a few minutes.
As we settled into the chairs, his story unfolded. With surprising honesty, he poured out the burdens he had been carrying. Sitting beside the still water, I realized that at every turn of every day, someone is longing for hope, comfort, or rescue.
There truly are no mundane days.
Throughout Scripture, God reveals Himself as a Rescuer. He delivers His people from danger, oppression, fear, and the crushing weight of sin. He steps into impossible situations and brings hope where none seems to exist.
David understood this truth. While seasoned soldiers trembled before Goliath, one young shepherd believed God was greater than the giant. It took only one stone because David trusted the One who rescues.
The lyrics of Rescue Me by We The Kingdom echo that same confidence: "Even when my faith is weak and my hope is dry... He's gonna lift me up. He's gonna fight for me."
Psalm 34:17 reminds us: "The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he rescues them from all their troubles."
Perhaps today God will use you to rescue someone with a kind word, a listening ear, a simple prayer, or even the unexpected joy of a floppy-eared puppy. And perhaps you'll discover that the day you thought was ordinary was actually filled with divine appointments.
Closing Prayer Father, thank You for being our faithful Rescuer. Open our eyes to the people You place in our path each day and give us hearts that are willing to listen, encourage, and love as You do.
When we feel overwhelmed, remind us that You fight for us and never leave us alone. Use our ordinary moments to display Your extraordinary grace, bringing hope to the hurting and peace to the weary. In Jesus' name, Amen.
