On the ranch there is always something that needs attention. The grass keeps growing, weeds don't wait, projects multiply, and the list is never really finished. I've discovered the same is true of life. If I'm not careful, I'll spend my days checking boxes while missing the One who gives those days meaning.
I can still remember a time when I didn't begin my day with God. I convinced myself I was simply too busy. My calendar had become my bible, and every empty space demanded to be filled.
It's no wonder Leanna Crawford's song Living Room Floor resonated so deeply with me: "I'm scared of being still. My calendar's a bible. Every hour of it filled. A never-ending cycle. I come with my agenda. You long for my attention."
Somewhere along life's journey, God's love settled deeply into my heart, and I discovered the priceless gift of spending quiet time with Him.
That's when everything changed.
"Slow down my heartbeat. Sync it with Yours. Lay down my ambition. Turns out I need You more."
Those lyrics beautifully capture the invitation God extends to each of us. We live in a world that applauds busyness, yet God calls us to something entirely different. He doesn't ask us to do more—He asks us to be with Him.
Whenever life begins to race ahead of me, I return to one of my favorite verses: "Be still, and know that I am God..." (Psalm 46:10, NIV)
Those words remind me to stop striving, step away from the noise, and once again fix my eyes on the One who holds my schedule—and my future.
Jesus offered the same invitation: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28, NIV)
The answer to our busyness isn't found in becoming more efficient. It's found in becoming more dependent on Him.
Even Jesus made time to withdraw from the demands of ministry. Mark tells us that because so many people were coming and going they didn't even have time to eat, Jesus said to His disciples, "Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest." (Mark 6:31, NIV)
God also reminds us through Ecclesiastes: "There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens." (Ecclesiastes 3:1, NIV)
Not everything must be done today. God's timing is always wiser than our hurried pace. And when we begin to feel exhausted, Isaiah offers this beautiful promise:
"But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." (Isaiah 40:31, NIV)
Perhaps today God isn't asking you to accomplish more. Perhaps He's simply asking you to slow down long enough to hear His voice. When our hearts begin to beat in rhythm with His, we discover that His peace accomplishes far more than our striving ever could.
Closing Sometimes the most productive thing we can do is be still. The world urges us to keep running, but God gently whispers, "Come to Me."
Could your greatest need today be not to accomplish more, but to slow down long enough to hear His voice?
As we surrender our crowded calendars and anxious hearts, He replaces hurry with peace, exhaustion with strength, and striving with His presence. Today, don't just make room for God in your schedule—make Him the center of it.
