I’ve been reading Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin—an insightful book written by two U.S. Navy SEALs who led in some of the most intense battles in Ramadi, Iraq. Their stories are gripping, and the lessons they offer are powerful enough that I’m already going through it a second time.

One of the central principles they teach is that real leadership begins with taking full responsibility. When we stop making excuses, stop blaming others, and truly step into ownership—our character shifts. We become stronger leaders, wiser followers, and more dependable teammates. We learn to set ego aside for the sake of the mission and those we serve beside.

What struck me most, though, was the emphasis on the team. No SEAL works alone. Every mission, every decision, every risk—they move together. That unity and reliance reminded me of another battlefield described in Scripture.

In 2 Kings 6:15–17, Elisha’s servant awakens to find their city surrounded by a vast enemy army. Overwhelmed, he cries out in fear, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?” Elisha responds with calm assurance: “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”

Then Elisha prays, “Lord, open his eyes that he may see.” And suddenly, the servant sees what had been invisible all along—the mountain covered in horses and chariots of fire, the armies of heaven surrounding them. The battle was never theirs alone. And neither are ours.

Whether we face overwhelming circumstances, difficult decisions, or unseen spiritual warfare, God surrounds us with strength we cannot always see. We have a Defender. A Helper. A heavenly Host standing guard.

Just like the SEALs fought as one unit, we too are never meant to fight in isolation. God Himself goes before us, stands beside us, and watches behind us.

We never fight alone.

Closing Prayer Lord, open our eyes to see that You are with us. When the battles feel overwhelming and fear tries to take hold, remind us that we are surrounded by Your strength, Your presence, and Your protection. Teach us to walk in humility, courage, and confidence—trusting that every step we take is covered by You. Help us to rely on the team You’ve given us, and most importantly, to rely on You. Amen.
