When working in the yard, there are two insects I could just as soon live without! The ant and the grasshopper.

Thinking about these familiar summertime pests reminded me of one of Aesop’s fables. When winter arrived, a hungry grasshopper begged an ant for food. The ant refused, reminding the grasshopper of the importance of hard work and planning ahead.

While the ant had spent the warmer months preparing for winter, the grasshopper had spent his time singing and enjoying the sunshine.

Interestingly, I discovered grasshoppers typically live about a year, while some ant queens can live for decades. What a remarkable difference in these tiny creatures!

But beyond their differences, they both serve as reminders of the incredible variety found in God’s creation. Even the smallest creatures have a place in His magnificent design.

And here’s where I have to pause and reflect. The grasshopper may have failed to prepare for winter, but how often do we fail to prepare our hearts for the seasons of life?

We get caught up in our busy schedules, our plans, and our earthly concerns, forgetting to turn our attention toward the One who created us. The One who is beautiful and loves me so much.

I stand amazed at all God has made, even the creatures I could happily live without! Yet even more amazing is the truth the God of all creation is mindful of me and cares about my needs. The Creator of the universe knows my name, sees my struggles, and welcomes me into His presence.

That’s a humbling thought!

Chris Tomlin’s song “Oh, Lord, You Are Beautiful” gently reminds us of this magnificent truth:

“And when Your eyes are on this child, Your grace abounds to me.”

What a comforting reminder we are seen and loved by our heavenly Father. His grace is not something we earn through hard work or careful planning. It is a gift flowing from His great love and mercy.

The soothing melody of today’s song brings to mind the words of 2 Chronicles 7:14:

“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

God calls us to humble ourselves, pray, and seek His face. Not merely to ask for what we need, but to draw near to Him because of who He is.

Perhaps the greatest preparation we can make for whatever lies ahead is to begin each day in His presence. Before the demands of life compete for our attention, we can pause, quiet our hearts, and seek the beauty of our Lord.

After all, the God who created the ant and the grasshopper also created you and me. And He invites us to know Him, trust Him, and walk with Him through every season of life.

So, before the busyness of another day takes over, will you take a moment to seek God’s face—not just for what He can do for you, but simply to be with Him? Because, O Lord, You are beautiful!
